life in the 90s

Oh the matching outfits, the nose picking with a plastic knife, the cheesy grins out our ears...we had it all!
THAT baby doll. I loved it.
My first duet. I always wondered where I learned to play piano.

I showed you a few old photos yesterday, and decided to share a few more personal ones inspired by Thriftary's Throwback Thursday! Enjoy!

nineteen twenty-one

Yesterday, Drew and I drove up to Knoxville for the funeral of my great-grandmother, Granny Katherine (1921-2013). I am blessed to not only have four grandparents, but I have spent 25 years with my great-grandmother. I have wonderful memories of her love and fiery spirit that I will never forget. I thought that it would be nice to share some photos. I will miss her very much.

inspiration board + giveaway winner

Source

This board describes how I'm feeling right now. I feel funny and childlike, comforted by God's love, bundled up like that cute little baby, soft and serene like that impressionistic painting, sparkly like the boots, unique like the vintage ring, and wishing I were eating a bowl of "healthy" cookie dough (is there really such a thing?)

I'm taking a mental health day today to regain my thoughts, spend time alone in prayer, and resting. I think we all need to take days like today every now and then - and probably more than we do.

And now it's time to announce the winner of the $50 Shabby Apple gift card!!! And the winner is....

Email me to claim your prize! I'm so excited for you! Thank you to everyone who entered.

recent updates

Over Christmas break, on top of resting and rejuvenating, I worked on some more artwork. After we took down the advent calendar and Christmas decorations, the wall above our dining table was empty and I didn't want to put up the same stuff I had before. I also had a problem with that area of the room being very under-lit. Whenever I would work at the table, I had to bring over extra lamps to be able to see what I was working on. So, I found a piece of plywood and had a bunch of fun painting this mountain landscape. Drew framed it with wood to match the table and we bought two wall lamps from Ikea to finish it off. Now, the wall flows really well with the rest of the room and that corner of our apartment is bright and cheery instead of dark and not very well lit.

I was also unhappy with the wall over our couch. When we first moved in, I had put stuff up that I knew would be temporary and I was ready to replace it! After doing a watercolor series recently, I decided to frame those and collage them above the couch.

So, those are my updates so far. I'm planning to update our coffee table and a few things in our kitchen before moving to our bedroom! :)

industrial drafting table

While I was away in California, Drew built me this beautiful drafting table. When I got home and saw it, I was overwhelmed. It went something like this:

Jenny: OH MY GOODNESS. I've always wanted a drafting table!!!! You are the bestest best most wonderful handsome man in the whole world. I've been dreaming of this since I was a little girl. Now I can paint or draw anything that I ever put my mind to - I'll be the next Van Gogh or Monet or Michelangeo....all because you built me this drafting table. You, my man, are the BOMB DIGGIDY SHAZAM!!!

Drew: Uhh... thanks, babe.

Okay. So maybe not exactly like that. I might have added a little extra enthusiasm.... or that might have just happened because I've got a lot of espresso in me right now. But, needless to say, I was PUMPED about this creation. And, my preciouses, I will be showing you how to make one of your own very soon. Yeah, that's right. You can be Michelangeo too.

birthday party fun

I had a wonderful birthday! Thank you for all of the well-wishes and sweet notes. The night before my birthday, some of the gals and I had a slumber party - full of yummy food, cupcakes, dancing, movies, painting nails, and a tent in the living room. I made this video so you could get a recap of the night's events. As you can see, it was full of a lot of crazy, girl fun. And I have some pretty awesome friends. :)

*Original music mashup is by Daniel Kim and can be found here. I apologize for the video quality - this was shot with my ipad mini and not my DSLR. The lighting wasn't the best either, but I wanted to capture the night anyways!

On my actual birthday, Drew and I went to eat lunch with his parents at Mimi's Cafe - Y-U-M. I had french toast (my favorite!) and we had some good laughs. Afterwards, Drew and I walked around the mall and I picked out a few special things for my birthday - including THIS awesome stuff from LUSH.

HERE'S WHAT I GOT:

  • Roots - Made of fresh mint infusion and minty oils, this hair treatment revitalizes your scalp as the extra virgin olive oil and honey soothes and softens your hair to make it shine without weighing it down! Made especially for fine hair.
  • Caca Marron Henna Hair Color - This henna hair color will ease you in gently with the perfect balance of daring red and a more modest rich brown all while softening, conditioning, and adding glorious shine to your tresses.
  • New! Shampoo Bar - A cinnamon and clover shampoo bar made to give you thicker, shinier hair as well as encourage hair growth.
  • Figs & Leaves Soap (sample) - Modestly draped in grape leaves, and demurely creamy beige in color; it's the scent of this soap that draws you in: alluring orange blossom and juicy figs, with an undertone of eastern exoticism. Figs are incredibly nutritious and good for your body, and their scrubby brown seeds exfoliate and really get to work getting you clean.
  • Bohemian Soap (sample)  This palm-free soap base and lemon oil are perfect for cleaning and toning the skin. Lemon juice is a natural astringent, perfect for oily skin and to balance skin’s moisture; no more troubled skin! Named for creative types, the bright, uplifting citrus scent is meant to stimulate creative streaks.
  • R&B Hair Moisturizer (sample) uses softening ingredients of organic avocado butter, oatmeal, olive oil, extra virgin coconut oil, jojoba oil and candelilla wax because they are extremely effective for conditioning the hair and scalp.

After buying out Lush, we went home and ate pot roast, dyed my hair with the henna (I'll show you a picture later - it's a very slight change), watched some of our favorite TV shows, danced to Frank Sinatra, and called it a night. I can't wait to try out all my new products and let you know how they work!

life + love: california

This past week, Savannah and I took a trip to California. And it was A-W-E-S-O-M-E. This was my first time to California. Actually, this was my first time west of the Mississippi River! So, when I stepped out of the plane, I was taken aback by how sunny it was there! I was stunned. No matter the weather, the sky is constantly a clear, bright blue. I couldn't get over it our entire trip. ALSO ... it's like the perfect combination of the beach, the desert, and the mountains. All in one. I've never been anywhere like it.

While we were there, we spent a lot of our time visiting our friend, Anica, who is going to school in Pasadena. I loved seeing her apartment and meeting all of her sweet friends. It's comforting to know that she is in a good place. We had a rental car, so after we settled in on Friday, we spent most of the day Saturday touring around Hollywood and Burbank, going on a WB Studios tour, and eating at the Elephant Bar. The WB Studios tour was my favorite on Saturday. It was so cool to see all the back lots and hear about what famous scenes had been filmed there. It was crazy how a lot of the same props and sets were used for multiple amounts of scenes.

Sunday was the best. Mostly because we went to Disneyland, but also because it reminded me of when the three of us traveled down to Florida to Disney World our senior year in college. We decided to go spontaneously and had such a blast. So, when we went to Disneyland on Sunday, it brought back so many memories. It was a great day! We saw a bunch of our favorite characters including: Peter Pan, Wendy, Mary Poppins, Cinderella, Aurora, Jasmine, Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Alice in Wonderland, Tinkerbelle, and then Mickey and Minnie again in cowboy//girl costumes.

On Monday, Savannah and I attended Blogshop Video with Bri and Angela. It was the perfect ending to our trip and gave us so many great ideas on how to further Maiedae and take it to the next level. You can see the short video I produced by clicking here. I can't wait to start using video more on my blog and exploring the fun ways I can share stories with you through it!

Be sure to check out Savannah's snapshots here. I'm glad to be home and settling back into my normal routine, but I will miss you, California!
